Insurance and Policies

The University's Public Liability insurance policies provide cover for the University's legal liabilities arising out of the acts or omissions of the University and its staff and students. The University's insurance policies do not cover students in respect of any acts or omissions on their part (unless the University could be considered to have at least partial legal liability). Host organisations are normally expected to provide insurance cover in respect of volunteers on the same basis as it does in respect of its own employees. Host organisations are therefore asked to complete the attached questionnaire in order that the University can assess the insurance position.

Note: All organisations should at least have Public Liability insurance that covers any volunteering activities that students are involved in whilst volunteering for that organisation.

A current Employer's Liability insurance policy is a statutory requirement for organisations that employ staff, and must be displayed at the place of work or be available electronically to anyone covered. If as part of their role students are providing any sort advice or guidance, then Professional Indemnity Insurance cover should also be provided. Insurance policies do not automatically state that they cover students working in a voluntary capacity. Volunteers need to be explicitly mentioned in either Employer's Liability or Public Liability Insurance for cover to apply.

Do you have a written health and safety policy?
Do you have accident and emergency procedures in place?
Will you report accidents/incidents to the University?
Do you have an equal opportunities policy?

By registering with the University's volunteering team your data will be used to correspond with you on volunteering matters.
