The National Trust in the Peak District looks after some of the most loved and visited landscapes in the country. Including Kinder Scout and Mam Tor, Dovedale and the Stepping Stones, and many more beautiful places. From the gritstone hills of the High Peak, to the rolling moors of Longshaw, and the limestone rivers of the White Peak, the staff and volunteer team work hard to both conserve the landscape, and welcome visitors, in order to make the Peak District a place for everyone to enjoy, forever.
To welcome, support, and inspire our visitors to make the most of their day and take care of the landscape. A flexible, independent, and self-motivated role, which gives the Trust a visitor-facing presence in our wildest and most loved places.
What's involved?:
- Focusing on areas with high visitor numbers, such Mam Tor, Jacob’s Ladder, Slippery Stones or Ashop Clough, you will provide a welcoming presence in the landscape for all visitors
- Sharing information about routes, giving advice and supporting with orientation
- Talking to visitors about our conservation work and sharing important behavioural messages around things like fire risk, dogs on leads etc in a positive way, always linking back to our cause
- Litter picking along the way, if you wish
- Our volunteers are encouraged to research our special places and learn about their unique histories, archaeology, and habitats
This role will suit you if you:
- Positive, friendly, approachable and confident to engage with people
- Enjoy walking and would like to walk with a purpose
- Ideally available on weekends and/or bank holidays/school holidays - you will be able to engage with more visitors on these peak days, so your role will have greater impact
- Looking for a flexible volunteering role that enables you to give as much or as little time as you like
- Happy to work and walk autonomously - our Countryside Welcome volunteers tend to go out alone, although we welcome couples or friends who would like to do the role in pairs
- Confident in a countryside environment and have a genuine passion for the outdoors, natural heritage or environmental conservation
- Know the Dark Peak well, or are keen to learn - you don't need to be an expert, but it will help if you can direct people along our busy routes, and can give advice and information to visitors to help them make the most of their day out in the Peaks
