The University of Manchester Botanical Grounds is part of the Firs Environmental Research Station, located close to Owen's Park in Fallowfield. We offer a range of volunteering opportunities for taking part in gardening activities, contributing towards building a botanical garden for outreach and teaching.
The Firs Botanical Grounds is a hidden oasis in Fallowfield. Located in what used to be Sir Joseph Whitworth's garden, the site has been a centre for plant-based research and teaching for over a century. It is home to a historic living plant collection, including greenhouses and outdoor spaces.
This event is a community open day, giving the public a chance to visit our garden and contribute to our plans to develop it into a botanical garden for Manchester. During the day, we will have a series of talks, tours and displays. We would be grateful for some student volunteers to help direct the public to and around the site, assisting with tours and displays, ensuring health and safety on site, and helping gain public feedback.
