The University of Manchester's Volunteering and Awards Team provides help and information for students to find volunteering opportunities in the local community and overseas. The team runs Volunteer Days and projects in partnership with local and international charities and not-for-profit organisations, supporting students to volunteer.
Each year, disasters around the world kill nearly 100,000 and affect or displace 200 million people. Many of the places where these disasters occur are literally 'missing' from any map and first responders lack the information to make valuable decisions regarding relief efforts.
Missing Maps is an open, collaborative project in which you can help to map areas where humanitarian organisations are trying to meet the needs of vulnerable people.
**NOTE: Due to the Christmas closure, during the period from 18th December to 4th January, please note that you can directly go to the Missing Maps website and click 'Get Involved' https://www.missingmaps.org. If you're new to mapping, choose 'Learn to Map' and watch the videos in the 'Beginners' section to get up and running. When you're ready, click 'Map Now', which will take you to the mapping platform. Choose a project and get started. Please keep record of the time taken and your evidence of volunteering and email this to us at volunteers@manchester.ac.uk. We will get back to you after 4th January to log your hours.**
It is no problem if you have never mapped before - it doesn't take long to learn. Visit the beginners section to find out how. If you already know how to edit OpenStreetMap - even better - you can get started straight away!
