Biffa is the lead in the waste and recycling industry, operating at 270 sites across UK, servicing 2.4 million households and 4.1. million bins every week.
Over the last 100 years, Biffa have been at the forefront of the UK's waste industry. Collecting 15,000 tonnes of rubbish every day from more than 80 thousand businesses and over 2 million households. However, what really drives us stretches well beyond the bins. Our purpose is to change the way people think about waste. Waste matters. We're here to help solve the waste challenge in Manchester, and that is only possible by influencing people to think and act differently.
In this role you will join the Social Value Team. Our purpose is to encourage people to be responsible about their waste management. We encourage waste reduction, re-use and recycling through engagement and education of Manchester residents and school children.
As a Student Waste Improvement Champion, you will engage with your student peers to promote proper recycling, and discourage litter and fly tipping. You will be able to distribute items such as green bags, recycling split bags and literature about recycling, so that other students have the correct resources to be able to manage their waste responsibly. You may also wish to organise events such as litter picks, and would be given training, support and equipment to be able to do so. Regular meetings will be held with the Social Value Team, who will be supporting you in your role, the other student volunteers and a member of the University Volunteering Team. The meetings will provide necessary training and guidance, and will be an opportunity to share ideas and create new methods of engaging and inspiring other students.
There are further opportunities depending on what you want to get out of the programme and how much time you are able to contribute. We will provide all necessary training, including health and safety training on site, the opportunity to visit a local Materials Recovery Facility, and the possibility of visiting other Biffa sites. You will also receive a Biffa welcome pack during initial training.
If you would like to gain experience in teaching, further your experience in the environmental sector, or take part in a cause to improve your local community, we want to hear from you!
