Society in the University of Manchester
Support GFA in its first-ever school build day for 30 students in year 9 from Dixons Brooklands Academy. The goals of the build day are: to teach students about the basic anatomy of an aircraft; provide open interaction between Yr9s and undergraduate engineering students; and, inspire them to take an interest in engineering
The University of Manchester is passionate about inspiring the youth of today and we believe that involvement in the GFA project could give a vast number of young people the opportunity to cultivate an enthusiasm for engineering. Crowdbuilding days are run as educational workshops starting with simple structural experimentation activities followed by training in the appropriate construction techniques and then the airframe would be constructed.
Activities are tailored to the age group and learning objectives participants would learn the basic principles of structural design and would have the chance to handle and construct aerodynamic surfaces under the guidance of undergraduate students. These valuable lessons combined with the knowledge that they are contributing to the primary construction of a real-life research aircraft are sure to stoke the curiosity in volunteers of any age.
