Elizabeth Gaskell's House in Manchester is the former home of the famous author and her family. Her novels include Mary Barton, Cranford, North and South, Ruth and Wives and Daughters and are enjoyed on television, stage and radio.
This beautifully restored home has spectacular period rooms, villa garden and a tea room for visitors to enjoy. We host a year-round programme of special events and activities and our much loved book shop sells a range of new and second hand books.
You will help with wedding set up and break down, welcome wedding guests to the House and answer their questions, and depending on the wedding, serve drinks at the drinks reception and bar.
You will need to do tearoom training as well as learning about the history of the House.
Weddings take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with exact times varying. We usually have at least 1 wedding a month, so this role would suit someone looking for a more ad-hoc volunteering role.
We would be looking for people with good time management skills, are reliable, and can keep to commitments. Please note this role will require some physical work such as helping to move furniture, emptying/loading dishwashers, and standing for longer periods.
