We are looking for students who would like to help our small group of lively young children (6-12) learn how to play chess and have fun.
Sharon Youth Centre Junior Chess Club is a local chess club for junior players aged 5 -15 years of age. We are looking for volunteers from the University of Manchester who can play chess and understand a bit about computers to help our kids to a) learn and b) play chess! Our beginners are taught the basics of how each piece moves and captures over 10 weekly lessons (devised by Chess in Schools & Communities) and by playing mini-games which allow them to appreciate how to use each piece. We then teach novice players how to play OTB (Over the Board) & give every child access to a ChessKid account which is designed for primary school children and meets CSC (Chess in Schools & Communities) safeguarding requirements.
We are luck to have a senior player Steven Tuson who played for the Lancashire team and is currently in the top 10 ranking for Greater Manchester acting as our advanced pupil coach. We are looking for a few undergraduate students to support our talented and enthusiastic club members, by acting as role models and teaching them a skill that can last for the rest of their lives.
Our Junior Chess Club meetings are held at the Sharon Church Youth Centre at The New Song Studio, Chorlton Road, Old Trafford, Stretford, Manchester M16 7WR [approximately 1½ miles from the Manchester Academy or 30 mins walk] on Saturdays from 1.00 - 2.30 pm during school term time. The Village & Community Hall main entrance is at the junction of Cornbrook Street & Chorlton Road. More details including an image of the building can be found on our website:
