The Literacy Pirates is an educational charity working to develop the literacy, confidence and perseverance of young people in London, so that they achieve both in school and in the world beyond. We know that young people sometimes need some extra help to achieve their full potential, and we believe that providing support outside of school can really help young people to do better in the classroom, while also developing their broader skills. We also believe that learning should be a great adventure! So working together with local schools, families and volunteers, we deliver unique real-world learning projects (such as published books, films, and apps) in our online learning environment.
We take children on voyages as readers and writers. Our after-school programmes, led by teachers, offer one to one and small group attention from trained volunteers, giving them the confidence to unfurl their sails. By welcoming them into our joyful spaces, publishing their work in the real world, and celebrating everything they do, we develop their literacy, confidence and perseverance.
We’re looking for Volunteers aged 16+ from across the UK to join our virtual crew!
As a Volunteer Crewmate, you’ll join our online, teacher-led afterschool sessions to help children aged 9 to 13 develop their reading and writing skills. By championing their work and celebrating everything they do, you will help them, one-to-one and in small groups on our online platform Vedamo, to become published authors!
We’re looking for people who are positive about social change and love literacy. No experience working with children or young people is necessary as full training is provided.
