Activities and Day Centre for Homeless People
The Booth Centre is an Activities Community Centre run in partnership with people experiencing homelessness. We are looking for committed, caring, passionate, non-judgmental volunteers to support us in delivering our service.
We're based in the city centre - less than 10 minutes walk from Victoria station.
Our community volunteers are mainly based in our Signposting and Advice Hub. You will work alongside a dedicated member of staff, who will make assessments of the support people are looking for as they are welcomed into the building. You will look after the welcome area alongside the member of staff and another volunteer, keeping on top of admin tasks, answering queries in person and on the phone, and using our signposting resources and visiting agencies to help people experiencing homelessness to access the right support from the right places.
You may be asked to do some one-on-one support work with people - this could include helping with a phone call, completing a referral form to another agency, or supporting people to access emergency housing.
You may be asked to help out in an activity - supporting people to get involved in confidence and community building sessions, such as art, drama, gardening, philosophy, job clubs, and more.
Most importantly - we need you to help us create a warm, welcoming, safe environment - where people feel valued, included, and equal, regardless of their circumstances.
In return - you'll have the opportunity to support one of the most marginalised groups of people in our society, meeting and building professional relationships with lots of different people. You will gain experience in communication and listening skills, and advice and support work. We reimburse all volunteer expenses, and there's breakfast, lunch and brews provided all day!
We ask our volunteers to commit to at least 1 session per week. Our busy drop-in session runs from 9 - 12pm Monday to Friday, and we ask volunteers to support us from 8.30 - 12.30.
There is also the opportunity to volunteer in the afternoon, from 12 - 4. This time of the day tends to be a little quieter, but the role remains the same - offering signposting support to people at the door or on the phone, and helping out with admin tasks. The afternoon session may suit you if you would prefer more time to work at a slower space, with more of a focus on admin tasks, and less face-to-face interaction with people.
