Elizabeth Gaskell's House in Manchester is the former home of the famous author and her family. Her novels include Mary Barton, Cranford, North and South, Ruth and Wives and Daughters and are enjoyed on television, stage and radio.
This beautifully restored home has spectacular period rooms, villa garden and a tea room for visitors to enjoy. We host a year-round programme of special events and activities and our much loved book shop sells a range of new and second hand books.
The House is open to the public are Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. We are currently only recruiting volunteers to help on our Thursday and Sunday open days and for one or more of the following time slots:
10am-1:45pm
1:30-4:45pm
All day with a lunch break
Volunteers volunteer on a weekly, fortnightly or flexible basis. The roles available are described below. Currently we are recruiting those who specifically want to volunteer in the Tea Room or Front Desk. Full training will be provided for all roles at a pace and over a period of time geared to each individual.
The Tea Room
• Serving tea, coffee and refreshments to visitors
• Selling other goods e.g., books and souvenirs
• Customer service skills in enhancing visitor experience
• Handling cash and card payments
Front of House / Welcome desk
• Welcome and check in all pre-booked visitors to the House
• Book in any ‘walk in’ visitors using the Ticket Source booking system
• Highlight children’s’ trails and other exhibitions, events
