Caritas is the social action agency of the Diocese of Salford covering Grt Mcr and Lancs. We work with those experiencing poverty, disadvantage, homelessness, social isolation and those seeking asylum or refugee status. We provide practical support, deliver services and advocate for those who are vulnerable and marginalised.
We are currently involved in delivering housing, information support and guidance and educational support to asylum seekers and refugees within Manchester.
Cornerstone Day Centre, which is one of our projects situated only 10 minutes away from Manchester University, currently runs English and mathematic classes to over 70+ asylum seekers and refugees who attend in order to improve their skills and gain qualifications needed to achieve their goals and aspirations.
The Caritas Education Project has been teaching English and Maths to refugees and asylum seekers for over three years. For the 2020/2021 academic year, many of our classes will be on Zoom due to the Covid-19 classes. We are currently looking for online volunteers to help out with any of the following:
- Conversation clubs. We are looking for individuals or groups who are willing to run online conversation clubs for refugees. These are a great opportunity for refugees to make friends and socialise while practising their English.
- Online Teaching Assistants. Our teachers often need someone to help out in their online classes. Teaching Assistants usually help students with speaking tasks for 20-30 minutes during a lesson.
Just let us know if you're interested, and feel free to send us any questions. Looking forward to hearing from you!
