Activity type: Community Work, Environment and Gardening, Health and Wellbeing, Practical Work and DIY
Stellify Award: This opportunity is part of 'Make a Difference'
Organisation Description: EMERGE 3Rs is a registered charity with a trading arm social enterprise EMERGE Recycling. Our core values are to promote the idea and practice of the real ‘3Rs’ of waste reduction, reuse and recycling and the wider concepts of community inclusion and improving local social, economic and environmental conditions.

We run FareShare Greater Manchester in partnership with the national charity; as a sub-regional hub, we receive surplus in-date food from the food industry and redistribute it to charities on the front line of alleviating poverty in Greater Manchester.
In Our ‘Touch Wood’ workshop we use reclaimed timber to make garden furniture and other household bespoke items.
Description of role: FareShare Greater Manchester redistributes surplus (overstocked) good food to frontline initiatives which are tackling food poverty across the city region. We need community-minded individuals to help us to get food orders to people in need in Greater Manchester, and consequently to tackle global warming by diverting food from landfill, which, in turn reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Helping hands are urgently required to receive, record, sort, pack and unpack supplies in our busy warehouse in Openshaw. We're looking for a minimum regular requirement of a single 4 hour shift a week.

620,000 people in Greater Manchester are living in poverty.
200,000 children live in households with an income below the poverty line.
157,000 households are experiencing fuel poverty.
20% of all jobs in Greater Manchester are paid less than the Real Living Wage. *

FareShare is working to help them.

We are a high profile national charity; fighting food poverty by tackling food surplus.
We source food which is surplus to requirements from food retailers and manufacturers and engage many volunteers to help re-distribute this surplus food to frontline charities and community groups across Greater Manchester who, in turn, provide meals to vulnerable people experiencing hardship: individuals who are homeless, families with low incomes, and people who are unemployed or socially isolated.

We have a number of ongoing volunteer opportunities at the FareShare warehouse where we need helping hands to carry out quality control and stock inventory, load and unload vans, and sort and prepare food orders for the many varied benevolent projects we support.

You will have the rewarding experience of making a real change within your community to the lives of people who are struggling with the most basic of needs, as well as helping to tackle climate change by preventing perfectly good food from going to waste in landfill sites.

We welcome volunteers who can commit to at least four hours per week.
We start at 8:30am, so that our vans are delivering food orders in time to allow charities to cook those much needed lunch time meals! However, we can be flexible with the times of volunteer shifts if required.

The necessary skills, experience and personal qualities for the role are as follows:
• Interest in the work of FareShare Greater Manchester and our values
• Physical fitness, in order to move and handle food orders
• Ability to follow procedures and instructions
• Good verbal communication skills
• High respect for Health & Safety standards
• Reliability and ability to commit to pre-agreed volunteer shifts

In return you will gain:
• New skills, experience and full training in the role
• Accredited Food Safety qualification
• Career and CV advice and support
• A reference for future employers
• The reimbursement of travel and lunch expenses
• The opportunity to give practical help to fight food poverty and reduce food waste (and associated CO2 emissions)
• The opportunity to meet like-minded people and make new friends

We welcome any commitment you can make to us.

* (Stats from GM Poverty Action - Oct 2020).
