Volunteer Day: 🍂 Fun Autumn Gardening at The Firs Botanical Grounds 🍂 - Tuesday 3 November

Organisation Details
University of Manchester Volunteering & Awards Team
Sub theme: Environment
Stellify Award: This opportunity is part of 'Make a Difference'
Description of role: - About the project:
The University of Manchester Botanical Grounds in Fallowfield (also known as “The Firs”), once part of the estate of Sir Joseph Whitworth, is situated next to Uttley House student halls and the Armitage Centre.
Walking through the gates and the high brick walls feels like discovering a secret garden, with vegetable beds, a pond with ducks, a moss house, rockery and beautiful plants. The gardens are a place where students and staff can do real-world research and carry out experiments with a focus on botany and climate change. On site they have a weather research facility and greenhouses which replicate growing conditions from all over the world. They even grow Manchester bananas there!
The site needs continual work to support the goal of being an amazing space for community enjoyment, events and teaching. Long term, they hope to open the grounds up to students, staff and the public as a local Green Hub, promoting wellbeing, biodiversity, urban greening and the environment as a whole.
Join us on a Volunteer Day to help us out on this journey with The Firs! The Volunteer Day will run from 11 - 3pm with a break for lunch. Please arrive at 10:45am - we will send you directions in advance.
On the day we will be outside, digging and carry soil to prepare for the installation of a brand new greenhouse! This will be quite a physical day so have a big breakfast and come ready to get stuck in.
- Desirable skills and qualifications:
You don’t need any skills or qualifications to take part in this volunteering opportunity – just lots of enthusiasm and energy! An interest in gardening or plant science would be a bonus!
- What will I need?
You won't need anything other than old clothes with multiple layers, sturdy shoes (don't wear your best white trainers!), some lunch and a water bottle. We will provide all the tools and can bring warm clothes and waterproofs if you don't have your own - please ask.
- How to get involved:
If you would like to find out more about this event, please email frances.muscatelli@manchester.ac.uk. If you would like to sign up to volunteer at this Volunteer Day please click “Apply now” below and we will email you to confirm your place.
