Reclaim the Night Volunteer Steward Nov 2026 (SU 26-27)

Organisation Details
University of Manchester Students' Union Volunteering Team
Sub theme: Human and Civil Rights
Stellify Award: This opportunity is part of 'Make a Difference'
Description of role: Every year we hold a demonstration that brings hundreds of students and members of the public together in solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence.
On Thursday 12th November, we’ll be marching from the Students' Union to Castlefield Bowl, and we’ll need volunteer stewards to make sure demonstrators are able to move safely through the streets.
The role of a steward is to walk along the outside of a march, ensuring the crowd is in an appropriate formation and doesn’t weave into the road. Stewards also keep an eye on demonstrators’ wellbeing, looking out for people in distress or in need of assistance and taking the appropriate steps to help them.
We may also need volunteers to help signpost or steward people to transport home after the march, as well as handing out megaphones, signs, and other things for the march. We may also ask stewards to support at the welfare point halfway.
The demonstration will have an accessible route, so this role is suitable for some disabled individuals, from whom we encourage applications. If you’re unable to, or don’t wish to, march along the route but would like to volunteer your time, please still apply and we will match you with a role at the Students’ Union building on the night or before the event.
The aims of the campaign this year are:
Get Me Home Safely - No worker deserves to feel unsafe after their shift on their commute home. We’re looking to lobby employers to ensure they have a duty to get their workers home safely, and to work with Transport for Greater Manchester to ensure routes home are safe for those travelling.
Trans Solidarity - We call on the Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority to act with conscience and formally condemn the supreme court ruling on the legal definition of a woman. By working with local charities, we will demand better and trans-inclusive support for survivors of gender-based violence.
Zero-Tolerance - Universities are spaces where everyone deserves to feel safe. We must have zero-tolerance policies towards gender-based violence in education spaces. Every person in power at universities has a duty to not perpetuate rape and harassment culture.
You must be able to commit to one of the below training sessions and to the evening (from around 5pm – 9:30pm) on Thursday 12th November.
Tuesday 10th November 17:00-18:00 - Hybrid Room 2.2 (2nd floor of UMSU building) / teams
Thursday 12th November 12:00-13:00 - In Person Room 2.2 (2nd floor of UMSU building)
If you have any questions about the role, campaign, or accessibility, please contact wl.officer@manchester.ac.uk or campaigns.su@manchester.ac.uk.
