Description of role: Sri Lanka has one of the highest literacy rates in South Asia, but many rural communities still face underfunded schools and a lack of educational resources. English is an important skill for future opportunities, particularly in tourism and international employment, yet many children have limited opportunities to practise speaking and listening. The Travelteer English Development Programme works with local pre-schools and primary schools around Hikkaduwa to help children develop their English skills through interactive lessons and creative activities. Alongside teaching, the programme focuses on improving classroom environments, ensuring children have welcoming spaces and suitable resources to support their learning.
Daily tasks may include:
Supporting pre-school lessons: Working alongside local teachers to deliver basic, interactive English activities for children aged 3–5, helping them develop early language skills and prepare for primary school.
Assisting with primary school lessons: Supporting English classes through conversation practice, vocabulary games and interactive activities that help children improve their communication skills and confidence.
Running after-school clubs: Leading engaging sessions that combine English learning with creative activities such as art and drama, giving children additional opportunities to learn in a fun and supportive environment.
Planning educational activities: Working with Travelteer coordinators and local teachers to prepare lessons and activities suited to the children's ages and abilities.
Renovating classrooms: Helping clear, clean and paint classrooms to create brighter, more welcoming spaces where children can learn and thrive.
Improving learning facilities: Assisting with educational displays, classroom improvements and the introduction of basic IT equipment and learning resources where appropriate.
Activities will vary depending on the school timetable and the needs of each placement. Volunteers will work alongside local teachers and Travelteer coordinators, contributing to both children's education and the improvement of the environments in which they learn.
Cost breakdowns
Registration fee: £195
This covers the UK operational costs of running our projects, as well as pre-departure, and in-country support. Once you have paid this, you can start your fundraising and look at booking dates with our team.
Living Cost: £35/day (Inc. food, accommodation & transport to and from the projects)
All of our volunteers are asked to fundraise towards their trip, too. Fundraising is set at £75 per week of volunteering, up to a maximum of £300. 100% of the funds raised go to Travelteer Impact, our UK-registered charity, and are used to support our projects through the provision of essential equipment and improvements to local facilities. Any funds raised above your target can be reimbursed towards the cost of your flights.
