Organisation Description: Our water management and engineering teams keep our navigations open and accessible to millions of people each day.
Each year we spend tens of millions of pounds repairing canals breaches and responding to emergencies, undoing damage caused by collisions, patching leaks and fixing routine wear and tear. This includes hundreds of large-scale works, from replacing lock gates and repairing brickwork, to installing electrics and hydraulics at the mechanised points along our network. Our specialist workshops also handcraft hundreds of lock gates every year.

Become part of something special by joining our Rochdale Canal Towpath Taskforce and helping to protect the history, heritage, and beauty of our waterways. This hands-on volunteer role offers the opportunity to explore the many beautiful locations along our canal network while making a real, visible difference to the places people love to visit.
As part of the team, you could be:
Cutting back vegetation around aqueducts and other canal structures
Litter picking
Removing graffiti and improving urban spaces
Helping to maintain towpaths and canal infrastructure
Supporting planned maintenance of our waterways
Whatever the task, you'll be part of a friendly team that takes pride in keeping our canals safe, welcoming, and full of life.

1st Wednesday of the month - Littleborough - Locks 32 - 49
2nd Wednesday of the month - Rochdale - Locks 49 - 60
3rd Wednesday of the month - Chadderton - Locks 60 - 69
4th Wednesday of the month - Newton Heath - Locks 70 - 80
Work party locations are confirmed each month in our volunteer newsletter, sent on the 21st of every month. These, however, can be subject to change based on operational capacity.
