Organisation Description: The Pankhurst Trust (Incorporating Manchester Women’s Aid) is a Manchester-based charity working to support women and children affected by domestic abuse, while also campaigning for a safer, more equal future for women and girls.
Based at the historic Pankhurst Centre, we provide a range of services including refuge and accommodation, community-based support, group work, drop-in services and opportunities for women to access support and rebuild their lives. We also care for and share the heritage of the Pankhurst Centre, connecting our work today with the history of women’s rights and activism in Manchester.
Our volunteers play an important role across the organisation, supporting our services, community work, heritage activities and events. We welcome people from a wide range of backgrounds and aim to provide meaningful volunteering opportunities that allow people to develop skills, gain experience and contribute to our mission.

Description of role: Volunteer with PTMWA and help us support women, children and wider communities affected by domestic abuse to live a life free from abuse.
At PTMWA, we carry forward the legacy of the Pankhursts by working today to help women, children and wider communities live free from domestic abuse. Our volunteers are an important part of this work, helping us deliver high-quality, person-centred services and create positive change.
We offer flexible volunteering opportunities at The Pankhurst Centre and across our wider services and community. Depending on your interests, skills and availability, you could support group sessions, refuge or referral line services, drop-in and community provision, administration, schools and outreach, or our museum, heritage and Pankhurst Centre work.
Conveniently located for University of Manchester students, The Pankhurst Centre is within the Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) hospital complex, making many of our opportunities just a short walk from campus. We also have volunteering opportunities across our wider Manchester services and community locations. We understand that travel costs can be a barrier to volunteering, so reasonable travel expenses are available in line with our volunteering expenses policy.
Our roles vary in setting, commitment and responsibilities. We provide induction, role-specific training and ongoing support.
By volunteering with PTMWA, you can help empower people affected by domestic abuse, promote equality and inclusion, and build a future where everyone can live free from abuse.
We welcome volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and skills. You don’t need previous experience of domestic abuse services – what matters most is your attitude, commitment and willingness to learn.
We’re looking for people who are:
• Reliable, committed and good communicators
• Friendly, approachable, compassionate and non-judgemental
• Comfortable working with people from diverse backgrounds
• Sensitive to challenging or emotional subjects
• Respectful of confidentiality, safeguarding and boundaries
• Able to work as part of a team and take direction
• Willing to learn, reflect and develop their skills
• Proactive and able to use their initiative
Different roles have different requirements, which we’ll discuss during application and onboarding. We value lived experience, professional experience and transferable skills, and are committed to an inclusive volunteering community.
