Organisation Description: Since 2007, we’ve been working with communities, farmers, health providers, activists and policymakers to challenge and subvert the industrial food system, a system which fuels the crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and economic inequity.
We establish and nurture initiatives and enterprises that tackle some of the most pressing issues in food and farming – at every level of this complex system.
We are part of the global movement for Food Sovereignty, a call to action that began with small farmers in the Global South, rejecting corporate dominance of farming and asserting the rights of all people to define and control their own ecological food systems. We know a better, fairer food system is possible...and we can prove it!
Located just a mile east of Stockport town centre, Woodbank Memorial Park is home to Woodbank Community Food Hub – an urban horticulture hub co-ordinated by the Kindling Trust, that joins up inclusive community gardening with commercial organic food production.
It’s the size of one and a half football pitches, and includes several large polytunnels for under-cover veg growing as well as three field blocks, apple trees and a community garden. It is a place to collect fresh organic veg bags delivered by the Veg Box People, who make sure farmers get regular demand and a fair price for their produce, so they can keep doing what they do best- growing great veg.
Kindling Farm is a Community Benefit Society owned by our 800 members with the aim of creating a fairer and more sustainable food and farming system for all. In April 2023, we purchased a 78-acre farm between Manchester & Liverpool, where we are now establishing a pioneering, agroforestry farm for the Northwest. Here we will research, explore, practise, and demonstrate the best ways to farm for wildlife, climate, soil, and communities.

Volunteer with our community gardeners every Mondays 12:00-16:00 & Thursday 10:00-16:00. The community garden is a locally led space where community growers work together to grow delicious organic veg all year round. Tasks include harvesting, planting, compost and watering. We also have wheel-chair access, toilets and raised beds.
Once a month, on a Saturday, we also host a full volunteer day for a more intense day of working the land, helping our commercial growing site keep going. Tasks involve tidying and bed preparation, DIY, and general weeding. We provide lunch & hot drinks for the day.
No prior gardening experience needed, just a enthusiastic attitude and not afraid to get your hands dirty.

- By bus from Stockport centre you can get the 364 bus takes lees than 10 mins, stops near Woodbank park entrance
- By car there is free parking, follow address Woodbank Car park, Little Moor lane, SK1 4BL
- By walk we are 30 mins away from Stockport railway station
