About the Role:
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our weekly Core Volunteer Day – our main volunteering opportunity at Hulme Community Garden Centre.
This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a working community garden environment while learning directly from our expert horticulturists, nursery managers and wider leadership team.
Volunteers will become part of the day-to-day running of the centre, supporting a wide range of horticultural, maintenance and community activities. This is an ideal opportunity for anyone interested in gardening, environmental sustainability, practical skills development, community work or exploring a future career in horticulture.
No previous gardening experience is required – just enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to get involved.
Activities will vary depending on the season and the needs of the centre, but may include:
- Supporting our horticulture team with growing, planting, propagation and garden maintenance.
- Learning practical gardening skills from experienced horticulturists and nursery managers.
- Helping care for plants, growing spaces, community gardens and nursery areas.
- Assisting with site maintenance, improvements and seasonal projects.
- Supporting the preparation and upkeep of community spaces.
- Helping with general tasks that support the smooth running of the garden centre.
- Working alongside staff, volunteers and community members on shared projects.
- Developing ideas and contributing to the ongoing improvement of the centre.
We're Looking For Someone Who Is:
- Interested in gardening, nature, sustainability or community spaces.
- Practical, reliable and willing to get involved in a variety of tasks.
- Keen to learn new skills and gain experience from experienced professionals.
- Comfortable working outdoors in different weather conditions.
- Friendly and enjoys being part of a diverse team.
- Able to commit to a regular volunteering day.
Whether you are an experienced gardener or completely new to horticulture, we welcome volunteers who are enthusiastic and keen to learn.
By volunteering with Hulme Community Garden Centre, you will:
- Gain hands-on experience working alongside professional horticulturists and nursery managers.
- Develop practical gardening, growing and maintenance skills.
- Learn about running a community garden and environmental organisation.
- Gain insight into leadership, project delivery and community engagement.
- Build confidence, teamwork and communication skills.
