Biodiversity Monitoring Volunteer – Make A Metre Matter (MAMM) Project

Description of role: Join us for a hands-on biodiversity monitoring session as part of the Make A Metre Matter (MAMM) project, helping to enhance green spaces across Manchester.
This project is a collaboration between Manchester City Council, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester, focused on improving biodiversity and understanding how green spaces benefit both wildlife and people.
In this session, you will be volunteering alongside other students to support real environmental research and monitoring activities across a range of urban green spaces.
What you will be doing -
During the session, you will take part in a range of activities including:
- Recording weather conditions (temperature, cloud cover, wind)
- Identifying and counting plants and flowers
- Observing and recording pollinators (e.g. bees, butterflies, insects)
- Using apps like iNaturalist to log species (Please make sure to make an account on iNaturalist beforehand for smooth monitoring)
- Assessing pollution levels (noise and litter)
- Observing how people interact with green spaces (social impact)
Sessions will last approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, and all guidance will be provided. No prior experience is required.
Locations:
-Monitoring will take place across several sites including:
-Quinney Crescent
-Platt Fields Park
-Birchfields Park
-Hulme Park
Important Information (Health & Safety)
The session will take place outdoors so please make sure you:
-Wear weather-appropriate clothing
-Wear closed-toe, sturdy footwear (no open footwear allowed)
-Bring water if needed
-Please ensure appropriate clothing is worn for successful participation.

Session duration: 1 -1.5 hours
