Role Description
Few places on earth rival South Africa for the raw spectacle of wildlife -- and fewer still offer the chance to actively protect it. Our Summer 2026 placements put you at the heart of two world-class conservation programmes: monitoring and safeguarding Africa's iconic Big 5 species in their natural habitat, and supporting dedicated sanctuaries working to rehabilitate rescued big cats and elephants. This is hands-on conservation work that contributes directly to the survival of Africa's most magnificent animals.
All Kaya volunteering placements are self-funded. Project fees include:
- Accommodation
- Airport pick-up and drop-off
- Meal package
- In-country orientation
- 24-hour local support throughout your placement
- Project transport, equipment, and resources

Role: African Big 5 Wildlife Conservation

Summary:
Volunteers work alongside rangers and ecologists to monitor and protect iconic Big 5 species in their natural habitat. Your contributions support anti-poaching efforts and long-term species recovery programmes, helping to safeguard some of Africa's most endangered wildlife for future generations.

Wildlife tracking, Habitat assessment, Conservation data recording, Physical fieldwork, Teamwork

Summary:
Volunteers support dedicated sanctuaries caring for rescued big cats and elephants. You will conduct behavioural monitoring and assist with habitat maintenance, directly aiding the rehabilitation and long-term welfare of animals that have often suffered as a result of human activity.

Animal behaviour observation, Welfare monitoring, Habitat maintenance, Record keeping, Empathy
