Sub theme: Asylum Seekers and Refugees, Culture, Education, Health and Wellbeing, Libraries, Older people
Organisation Description: Rise and Flourish is non profit organization base in Longsight, Manchester. We create welcoming spaces where people can learn, share, and grow together. Our project combines English language learning (ESOL) with the joy of cooking and movement, we empower migrants, refugees, and people where English is not their first language to build skills, confidence, and connections that bring people together, reduce isolation, and promote wellbeing all while learning English. Together, we are not just learning English – we are rising, flourishing, and building stronger communities.
Description of role: Rise and Flourish volunteers play a supportive and empowering role, particularly within ESOL cooking classes and movement sessions.
In ESOL cooking classes, volunteers help create a relaxed and inclusive learning environment where participants can practice English in a practical, everyday context. They assist with explaining recipes, introducing new vocabulary related to food and cooking, and encouraging conversation among participants. Beyond language support, they also help build confidence, foster cultural exchange through shared dishes, and ensure everyone feels comfortable and included.
Volunteer Roles – Before the Session
Volunteers are responsible for preparing the space to ensure a smooth and welcoming session. This includes setting up chairs and tables (cleaned and wiped), placing an apron on each chairs. Volunteers are involved in preparing ingredients by separating them onto plates for each group and setting out chopping boards and knives. The main table should be clear and ready for use.
Overall, Rise and Flourish volunteers act as facilitators, language supporters, and community builders, helping participants improve their English, connect with others, and gain confidence through engaging, practical activities.
