🌷Volunteer Day: Fallowfield Flower Fun🌻- Monday 16 March

Organisation Details
University of Manchester Volunteering & Awards Team
Sub theme: Children, Environment
Stellify Award: This opportunity is part of 'Make a Difference'
Description of role: Join us on Monday 16th March from 1:30pm - 3:30pm to clean and green The Gem pocket garden in Fallowfield. We'll be working with Manchester City Council and a small group of children from Wilbraham Primary to litter pick, weed and plant some flowering bulbs in the small community garden.
This area was originally an alleyway which opened out to a small concrete area known for fly tipping. The pocket garden was designed and installed in 2023 by Manchester City Council with support from the local residents. Maintenance activity has taken place with local schools carrying out eco-school biodiversity teaching within and around the garden as well as Biffa hosting tidying, painting, and planting as part of their social value days on site. This has brought: bird boxes, flowers and herbs, and litter picking to the community garden.
This event will be part of The Great British Spring Clean, running 13–29 March 2026. This is the UK's largest mass-action environmental campaign organised by Keep Britain Tidy. It encourages volunteers to pick up litter, protecting wildlife and improving local communities. Anyone can join, with over 400,000 people participating annually to remove harmful waste from parks, streets, and beaches.
Desirable skills and qualifications:
You don’t need any skills or qualifications to take part in this volunteering opportunity, just lots of enthusiasm. We'd like to recruit students who have the confidence to chat to primary school children and help them feel included in the activities. There will be plenty of staff support on the day and a full briefing when you arrive.
Benefits:
This Volunteer Day gives you the chance to volunteer with other students and local school children. You’ll be working in a team, helping to make a massive difference to the local community.
Meeting Point:
Meet us at 1:30pm at The Gem Pocket Garden, 18 Sopwith Drive, Fallowfield - https://what3words.com/olive.spider.tune
How to prepare:
• Please bring some water
• Please wear appropriate cold/wet weather clothing and sturdy footwear. Please don't wear your favourite white trainers as they may get dirty! I can provide wellington boots, plus hoodies and waterproofs for anyone who doesn't have them.
Please direct any questions to frances.muscatelli@manchester.ac.uk. We hope to see you there!
