Sub theme: Children, Education, Youth Work and Young People
Stellify Award: This opportunity is part of 'Make a Difference'
Organisation Description: Around one in four children leave primary school unable to read well. Often these
children are from disadvantaged backgrounds. As literacy can have a significant
impact on a person’s life chances, a lack of literacy skills can contribute to a
continuing cycle of disadvantage and lack of opportunity.
This project aims to support primary school children who struggle with reading to
become more abled readers, by giving them the opportunity to work with a volunteer
throughout the year. Volunteers will be able to build positive relationships and help
the children to grow in their confidence towards reading.
Every week volunteers will read with the same three or four children for half an hour
each. The project runs on Monday afternoons during university term time.
Volunteers meet near the Students’ Union at around 1pm. The project runs in a primary school
school which is a short walk from the university. Volunteers should arrive back at the university by 3pm.
Not only will does this project provide volunteers with valuable experience working
with children, but also helps them make a difference to children’s lives. The
overall aim is to help children to become happy and confident readers!
