Organisation Description: At Read Easy www.readeasy.org.uk/ we offer free, confidential one-to-one reading coaching to adults who want to learn to read. Our local group, Read Easy Manchester South & West, was formed in 2019 to help adults in Wythenshawe to read. In 2022, we expanded our remit to include Trafford. Each volunteer Reading Coach meets twice a week with their Reader to go through our programme which can take up to 2 years to complete. We also have a local Management Team of volunteers and roles become vacant from time to time.
Description of role: You will be helping our local community in SW manchester understand what a Read Easy group does; primarily how local people can get the reading support they need; and also how volunteers can help. Your form of reaching out wil be in using both paper and social media effectively to raise awareness and publicise your group. You will work with our Volunteer Community Networker and you will be supported by other members of our management team.
What you will be doing:
- Liaising with the Management Team to decide on the group’s community engagement and publicity needs and specifically with your Team Leader, Referral Networker and Community Networker.
- Setting up and/or maintaining the group’s Facebook page, X and/or other social media platforms to raise our group’s profile.
- Ensure that there are regular posts on the above media platforms, preferably including human interest stories, and that our Read Easy Group has as many followers as possible from relevant local organisations.
- Becoming familiar with the resources available to you on the Read Easy website and liaising with Read Easy head office on their use and nationally planned publicity campaigns.
- Identifying any specific opportunities for publicity in the local paper, radio, TV and digital media, which might also involve occasionally drafting and sending press releases to media contacts.
- Creating content (stories, video interviews, text and photographs) for the group’s Facebook and X pages and for Read Easy UK’s website and newsletter about your group’s activities and achievements.
- Ensuring that you have written permission from all parties to use any such material for the purposes you intend.
- Following the Read Easy Brand Guidelines to preserve a clearly recognisable and consistent Read Easy identity.
- Attending Management Team meetings, typically every six to eight weeks.
- Exploring the feasibility of producing a quarterly newsletter for our volunteers, funders and for local community organisations.
The skills you will need:
- Knowledge and previous experience of paper and digital publicity/marketing are an advantage.
- Good communication and people skills.
- Knowledge and ability to use social media effectively is useful for the role.
- The confidence to promote the work of Read Easy and a strong commitment to improving the lives of people who struggle with reading.
- Reasonable confidence in using IT.
- The ability to use initiative and work independently.
- A willingness to abide by Read Easy policies and procedures.
- An open attitude that encourages two-way communication and willingness to ask for and offer support to the Team.
- A non-judgemental attitude and respect for others, with a commitment to equality and diversity, so that you can make everyone feel valued and included.
- Energy and enthusiasm.
