Volunteer Day: Gardening at the Firs Botanical Grounds🌱💚 - Wednesday 20th August

Organisation Details

University of Manchester Volunteering & Awards Team
Activity type: Environment and Gardening
Description of role: The University of Manchester Botanical Gardens in Fallowfield (also known as “The Firs”), once part of the estate of Sir Joseph Whitworth, is situated between the Owen's Park student halls and the Armitage Centre.
Walking through the gates and the high brick walls feels like discovering a secret garden, with vegetable beds, a pond, a moss house, rockery and beautiful plants. The gardens are a place where students and staff can do real-world research and carry out experiments with a focus on botany and climate change. On site they have a weather research facility and greenhouses which replicate growing conditions from all over the world. They even grow Manchester bananas there!
The site needs some work to bring it back to its former glory and towards the goal of being an amazing space for community outreach and teaching. Long term, they hope to open the grounds up to students, staff and the public as a local Green Hub, promoting wellbeing, biodiversity, urban greening and the environment as a whole.
Join us on this Volunteer Day to help us on this journey with The Firs!
