Description of role: Burnage Library Activity and information hub runs a weekly 2 hour Digital Café for older
people who are keen to develop their digital skills and boost their confidence. It’s an
informal and friendly drop-in session including learners with varied needs, skill levels and
frequency of attendance. Learners usually bring their own devices but also have access to
Library laptops and PCs.

Volunteers are needed to help support learners on a one-to-one basis with their IT queries
and problems. You don’t need a very high level of technical skill – volunteering in a support
role will help develop your interpersonal skills, understanding of digital exclusion and
understanding of lifelong learning in a community setting.

Role Description
- Provide support for 2 hour weekly Digital Café session
- Listen and respond to learner led needs for support with everyday ICT.
- Work with learners’ existing knowledge and skill levels and help them to build their
skills and confidence.
- Support learners with problems that are specific to their particular device (phone,
tablet, PC. Laptop)
- Work under the direction of the session leader and refer any more problematic
queries to them.

Person Specification:
- Understanding of the need for GDPR, internet safety and handling confidential
personal information
- Good listening skills and ability to communicate well with older people.
- Ability to take directions from the session lead
- Punctuality and reliability
- Familiarity with ICT used in everyday life.
- Enjoy working in a community setting.

Desirable: Understanding the issues that face older people in term of digital inclusion
