About Manchester Histories
Manchester Histories is an award-winning charity that works collaboratively to reveal, share and celebrate Greater Manchester’s diverse histories and heritage. We connect people to explore the past and shape the future through histories and heritage. We deliver a yearlong public and community engagement programme and host the biennial Manchester Histories Festival.
About the Project - Queer Up North 1992-2002: Celebrating Manchester’s LGBTQ+ Heritage
The aim of the project is to preserve and celebrate the rich LGBTQ+ heritage of Manchester, England - focusing on the Queer Up North (QUN) festivals held between 1992 and 2002.
The project is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and The Granada Foundation. Thanks to National Lottery players.
The project includes:
Oral Histories Collection: 40+ interviews will be recorded of artists, audiences, and community members who were integral to QUN’s success and will provide a personal and profound insight into the LGBTQIA+ experiences of the time.
Digital Archive: A comprehensive digital archive preserving the festival’s legacy will be created. This website will feature images, video, audio and stories, bringing the archive to life for a broad audience. It will showcase highlights from the physical QUN archive currently held at Manchester Central Library & University of Bristol, making material accessible digitally to researchers, educators, activists, and the wider community.
Public Engagement and Events: A series of events, talks and creative outputs will take place in Manchester to celebrate the QUN festivals (1992-2002), generating greater awareness and celebration of LGBTQIA+ heritage.
