Activity type: Administration, Advice, Information and Support, Asylum Seekers and Refugees, Counselling and Listening, Homeless and Housing, IT
Stellify Award: This opportunity is part of 'Make a Difference'
Organisation Description: Mustard Tree combats poverty and prevents homelessness across Greater Manchester.
We create opportunities for people to help themselves through providing practical support, life skills, and connections into work.
We provide crisis-support - helping people with access to food, furniture and clothing - as well as one-to-one support and training to help people build themselves back up.
Each month we see 10,000 visits, and help from volunteers is essential for us to run our services and support our community.
As a volunteer, you'll be helping across our front-line services, chatting with Greater Manchester residents helping solve practical problems.
If you can volunteer an hour a week for 10 weeks we'd love to hear from you - whether that's helping with enquiries over the phone with our Helpdesk team, assisting with our clubs and classes, including our ESOL (English language) or Computer Confidence classes, or helping people with CVs and applications in our Job Club.

Description of role: Can you help Mustard Tree respond to need, arrange donations, signpost, and offer a friendly voice?
Mustard Tree’s Helpdesk is our ‘nerve centre’, from which all our collections, deliveries, referrals, and responses are organised.
Everything from members of the public looking to donate, people with general questions, clients seeking support, or Charities referring clients to our services. It is often the first aspect of Mustard Tree our community engage with, before coming on-site for support and training.
As a Helpdesk Volunteer, your role would involve:
Being a friendly, supportive, patient voice for those engaging with Mustard Tree.
Answering calls from the public, donors and clients.
Building an understanding of what we do, offer, and general ‘FAQ’ answers.
Overseeing and making bookings on our logistics system, occasionally doing courtesy calls.
Supporting the running of our Helpdesk Inbox, for furniture/donation enquiries.
Working with fellow Volunteers and Helpdesk Staff to create a world class welcome.
Supporting the development of our Freedom Trainees.
Timings:
9:00am until 3:00pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday (with free lovely lunch – freshly prepared by our kitchen Trainees – included), based at our Ancoats Hub.
We would ask for a commitment of at least one day a week, for a minimum of 10 weeks, if possible.
