Organisation Description: Speakeasy is a specialist aphasia charity. Aphasia is a language and communication difficulty caused by stroke or other brain injury. It can affect speech, understanding, reading, writing and use of numbers and time. Our mission is to make a positive difference to the lives of people who have aphasia and their carers. We provide support for people when they need it and for as long as they want it. We offer a range of therapeutic activities to suit people’s needs. mostly group based. These are designed by our specialist speech and language therapists and staff with aphasia to assist with building skills and confidence, and improving communication. Our activities are varied, change regularly and are all purposeful. Volunteers are vital to Speakeasy and are a highly valued part of the organisations. Could you help in any way?
Description of role: Speakeasy is a specialist charity that offers support, therapy and opportunity to people affected by aphasia – a communication difficulty after stroke or brain injury. We focusing on developing and enhancing confidence and skills and peer support; working closely with individuals and small groups with aphasia. Our volunteers support people to join in conversations, develop skills and confidence and work towards individual goals. No previous experience needed (although useful) as training will be provided. However excellent listening and communication skills, an interest in this area and/or a willingness to learn more about aphasia and Speakeasy’s ethos is essential.
