🌟Victoria Baths Big Clean Volunteer Day 12th March🌟
Organisation Details

University of Manchester Volunteering & Awards Team
Activity type: Community Work, Heritage
Sub theme: Museums
Description of role: Volunteer Day at Victoria Baths, March 12th.
Victoria Baths is a Grade II* swimming and bathing complex, opened in 1906, with three pools, a Turkish Baths suite, and facilities for bathing and laundry. VB served the local community for 87 years before closing in 1993 (30 years this year!) Originally described as “A water palace for every citizen of Manchester to be proud of”, the Baths is a beautiful space packed with ornate details and features such as tiles, stained glass, and mosaics.
Today VB is a much-loved heritage site, and multi-event venue. Their pools no longer ripple with water but they’re still full of activities and experiences, from weddings to raves, and loads more in between!
Due to the cold weather, Victoria Baths close for the winter months, reopening to the public for events and open days from March. But before we do that, we have to make sure the building is ready, and so we have the big clean, a time for us to tick of essential maintenance tasks, spruce up the pools and make sure the building gets some TLC before we start the season.
As a charity, VB relies on income from events to make sure we can care for the building, share its history, and welcome people to explore and enjoy it now and in the future. A team of volunteers help to maintain the building and deliver events, but it is all hands on deck and the more the merrier when it comes to the Big Clean. It’s a massive job, with three pool halls, the Superintendents flats, and a huge range of tiles, glass, mosaics and brass, there is always more we wish we could do each year so any support from groups is much appreciated and makes a huge difference.
For the Big Clean all volunteers are provided with equipment and necessary PPE. As well as hot and cold drinks, biscuits, and snacks throughout the day.
Tasks may include:
Cleaning key areas of the baths, including the pools, changing facilities, balconies, Turkish Baths etc.
Cleaning stained glass, with support from staff (requires specialist equipment).
Clearing and organising equipment and spaces.
Maintenance jobs such as sanding and painting.
The University of Manchester Volunteering Team will be bringing a team of students to help with the Big Clean-Up effort, and we need as many helpers as we can get! Apply below if you'd like to be on our student team. The VB staff are also offering us snacks throughout the day, and a free tour of the stunning building afterwards!
KEY INFO:
- We will meet at Victoria Baths at 10:30am, but if you want to join later that is fine. You need to let the team know so we know when to expect you. This opportunity is flexible so you do not have to stay for the whole day.
- Refreshments will be provided but please bring your own lunch.
- There is very little heating in the building so please wear warm clothes.
-Once you apply there is a contact form to fill out for Victoria Baths
