ABOUT THE ROLE:
Power Up is a hands-on, fully interactive gaming exhibition featuring video games and consoles from the past five decades. There is something for everyone, from Pong to Pacman, Sonic to Street Fighter, and Mario to Minecraft, plus a selection of games created in Manchester!
We are looking for a team of enthusiastic volunteers interested in gaming and delivering amazing customer service who can support our Power Up exhibition. Volunteers will help to direct visitors to the consoles and games they are most excited to play, as well as highlighting special Manchester related games and designers. Why not challenge visitors to a game? Chat about retro games and share some gaming facts. That’s what Power Up is all about!
Due to the length of this exhibition's run, it will require dedicated volunteers who can commit to volunteering for at least 12 months to support in this fun, interactive exhibition space. Power Up is open every weekend and will also be open 7 days a week during all school holidays. Volunteers will be asked to support midweek in school holidays to help out at our busy times.
In this role you’ll be:
• Helping to enhance the overall visitor experience by providing excellent customer service.
• Encouraging visitors to interact with a varied collection of games in the exhibition.
• Aiding visitors with general enquiries about the exhibition, or the museum.
• Assisting with any set up requests – training will be provided.
• You will learn about the Science Museum Group’s Health and Safety Policies, risk assessments and safe systems of work which you will be required to follow. This will allow you to take care of your own personal safety and that of others.
If you need help with your application or would like to talk to us about what we can do to support you through this process, please email Jess Wight at Volunteering@scienceandindustrymuseum.org.uk call +44 (0)1616967819.
What you’ll get from volunteering:
We want to ensure you have a rewarding experience with us. That’s why you’ll:
• Full training and development opportunities from our bespoke SMG Academy, related departments and induction training schedule.
• Discounts in our café and shop, along with free entry into our exhibitions and events across SMG.
• Expenses cover for your travel up to £7 each day.
• We provide a reference upon request for all volunteers who have supported the Science and Industry Museum.
What you’ll bring to the role:
This role is perfect for people who:
• Have excellent communication skills and enjoy chatting to people.
• Have an interest in gaming, exhibitions or museums in general
• Are able to follow instructions.
• Can complete tasks independently, and as part of a team when required.
• Are reliable and have excellent time keeping.
We ask all volunteers to show inclusive behaviours, value everyone’s contribution, and promote a culture of openness.
