Reclaim the Night 2024 Volunteer Steward
Organisation Details
University of Manchester Students' Union Volunteering Team
Activity type: Event Support, LGBT+
Sub theme: Human and Civil Rights, LGBT+
Stellify Award: This opportunity is part of 'Make a Difference'
Description of role: [To volunteer - Please submit a volunteer application via this volunteer hub advert AND sign up to a training via the link in this advert]
Every year we hold a demonstration that brings hundreds of students and members of the public together in solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence.
On Thursday 21st November we’ll be marching from Students' Union to Great Northern and we’ll need volunteers to make sure demonstrators are able to move safely through the streets. The role of a steward is to walk along the outside of a march, ensuring the crowd is in an appropriate formation and doesn’t weave into the road. Stewards also keep an eye on demonstrators’ wellbeing, looking out for people in distress or in need of assistance and taking the appropriate steps to help them.
You must attend ONE of the volunteer trainings, please sign up here: https://forms.office.com/e/E4sbXF4Jda
Wednesday 20th November 12.30pm-1.30pm Room 2.2
Wednesday 20th November 12.30pm-1.30pm Online
Thursday 21st November 12pm-1pm Room B2
On the night will be provided with a high-vis vest and a megaphone.
Staff stewards trained in safeguarding as well as Showsec staff will be there to support you. There are WC facilities and water fountains at the beginning and end of the route.
The demonstration will have an accessible route, so this role is suitable for some disabled individuals, from whom we encourage applications. If you’re unable to, or don’t wish to, march along the route but would like to volunteer your time, please still apply and we will match you with a role at the Students’ Union building on the night.
Event Overview: Reclaim the Night is Manchester Students’ Union’s annual campaign against sexual harassment and gender-based violence. This year, Reclaim the Night aims to spread the message regarding safety for women and marginalised genders. The theme is getting home safely and has three aims: 24-hour student bus routes, trans inclusion within the Women's Night-time Safety Charter and lobbying for the council to implement a safe transport home policy for businesses with employees that work past 11pm.
Trigger warning: Please note our theme for this year is getting home safely and will potentially features themes of sexual assault, rape, harassment and coercion.
