Description of role: Community Development – Nepal
Volunteer in Nepal! Join our Community Development team and make a significant impact in the Himalayas, the highest mountain range in the world. Nestled between China to the north and India to the west, east, and south, Nepal is home to nearly 30 million people. Unfortunately, it ranks as the fifth poorest country in Asia, with 20% of its population living in poverty.
Our community development program focuses on supporting remote mountain communities. Travelteer works across several villages around Pokhara to enhance agriculture, infrastructure, and education.
Given that over 80% of the population resides in rural mountain areas, access to education and learning resources is limited. Consequently, literacy rates are low, with only 60% of men and 49% of women being literate.
Volunteer Roles:
• English Development:
Many teachers in the schools we support have limited English proficiency, and resources are scarce, especially in remote villages. Our English Development project offers a unique opportunity to make a difference by providing students with valuable exposure to native English speakers.
• IT Support:
While some schools have IT labs, many teachers lack training in computer use and IT instruction. Join us to help train teachers and students in computer skills—regardless of your tech expertise, your contribution will be valuable!
• Sports Development:
The Sports Development project introduces new sports to local schools and provides necessary equipment through fundraising. Your involvement helps ensure that students have the resources to engage in sports both during and outside of school hours.
• School Revamps:
Many schools face significant facility shortages. Collaborate with local technicians to build and enhance school facilities, including classrooms and kitchens, creating a positive learning environment for children.
• Agricultural Project:
In partnership with the SAHAS naturalist team, we construct greenhouses for farming and engage in agricultural activities. The produce from these harvests benefits local communities, and the greenhouses support sustainable growth through wet and dry seasons.
Travelteer staff offer 24/7 support both before and during your placement. Our online membership dashboard simplifies preparation, and our UK team is always available for any inquiries. On the ground, our skilled local staff provide UK standards combined with local expertise to ensure the best experience.
You can join our team from June to August, with placements ranging from 2 weeks to 12 weeks. Volunteers work approximately 6 hours a day, Monday to Friday, with evenings and weekends free for personal exploration or relaxation (safaris are a great option!).
