Activity type: Animals, Caring, Community Work, Culture, Environment and Gardening
Sub theme: Animals, International
Stellify Award: This opportunity is part of 'Make a Difference'
Organisation Description: Ethical volunteering organisation with opportunities in Sri Lanka and Nepal
Description of role: Join our Marine & Wildlife Conservation team and make a difference by working with wild animals and protecting their habitats. Experience the adventure of a lifetime alongside university students from around the globe!
Our Marine & Wildlife Conservation program collaborates closely with the Sri Lankan Environmental Department and local NGOs to develop sustainable projects. For instance, at our turtle sanctuary, we tackle the illegal trade of turtle eggs and turtles while educating the local community.
Through our hands-on projects, you'll be fully immersed in environmental conservation. Activities include helping to rebuild sea turtle populations, replanting native trees, and tackling plastic pollution. We have a long-term strategy to regenerate vital rainforest areas and sustain marine life in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province.
The Marine & Wildlife Conservation Programme encompasses several diverse sub-projects aimed at rehabilitating and preserving Sri Lanka’s wildlife and marine ecosystems. Each week, volunteers participate in the following activities:
Volunteer roles
• Rainforest Replantation
Venture into the jungle to replant indigenous trees. Our goal is to restore the rainforest in Sri Lanka’s Southern district by increasing native plants and habitats for endangered wildlife.
• Tree Nursery
Our tree nursery grows the saplings that will be replanted in various conservation efforts.
• School Agriculture Project
Partner with local schools to cultivate fruit and vegetables, supporting community agriculture and education.
• Turtle Hatchery
Boost sea turtle populations by incubating artificial nests in a secure environment and releasing hatchlings into the ocean. Assist with the care and rehabilitation of injured turtles brought in by local fishermen.
• River Clean-up
Navigate Sri Lankan rivers to collect waste and educate the community about the impact of single-use plastics.
• Beach Clean-up
Restore and protect beaches and coastal rivers that serve as crucial habitats for marine life. Help sort recyclables for local businesses.
Travelteer staff are available 24/7 to support you before and during your placement. Our online membership dashboard makes preparation straightforward, and our UK team is always ready to assist. Once on-site, our skilled local staff combine UK standards with local expertise to ensure the best experience.
You can join us year-round, with placements available from 2 weeks to 6 months. Volunteers work approximately 6 hours a day, Monday to Friday, with evenings and weekends free for relaxation or exploration (safaris are a great option!).
