Description of role: This role is designed to support individuals seeking to develop skills and experience in conservation, ecology and countryside management with a view to gaining future employment in the sector.
Immersive volunteers will have the opportunity to develop skills in the following:
- Practical conservation and habitat management
- Visitor engagement
- Site presentation and upkeep
- Improving access and maintaining public rights of way
- Tree safety management
- Ecological surveillance
- Volunteer group leadership (under direction of ranger staff)
- Youth and community engagement
- Assessing risk and implementing health and safety protocols
- Use of specialist hand tools and machinery
- Project planning and delivery (of small scale conservation initiatives, with guidance from staff)
The role will allow volunteers to gain a detailed understanding of the role of a ranger for the National Trust as well as wider property projects at Dunham Massey. We hope individuals will also see significant personal development over the course of their time with us, gaining confidence and developing important transferrable skills in:
- Communication
- Teamwork
- Time management and organisation
- Decision making
- Data processing
- Volunteer leadership
Rangers will work with volunteers to ensure their experience is as tailored as possible to match their interests, whilst also encouraging individuals to explore new opportunities.
Volunteers will work with all members of the ranger team to deliver practical estate maintenance, targeted conservation, habitat improvements and visitor engagement as well having the chance to get involved in work to support other property departments, offering numerous networking opportunities.

Volunteering as part of this role is limited to a maximum of 30 hrs per week for up to 12 months.
On site accommodation can be provided with this role.
