Organisation Description: SolidariTEE is an international, student-run charity which provides grants to NGOs in Greece who then provide asylum seekers, refugees and migrants with access to legal and psychological support. The support of a legal professional enables them to understand the asylum process and be informed of their obligations under it, and this preparation is crucial in ensuring fairer outcomes. The work of the NGOs is essential considering it is almost impossible to access a state funded lawyer in Greece. Because there is psychological evidence that traumatic memories are stored in different regions of the brain and the brain generally focusses more on the emotional aspect of the memory than the details, psychological support is also crucial in ensuring asylum seekers can recall their experiences in the way the process requires during their interviews. As volunteers, we raise fundraise to provide these grants through organising events and selling our sustainable, ethically produced tee shirts featuring artwork by asylum seekers. We also aim to raise awareness about issues affecting refugees globally, including the racism and islamophobia that underpins the experiences of many, and break false conceptions about refugees and the asylum process. We do this on our social media, and through hosting awareness events
Description of role: As a team member, you will work to raise awareness for SolidariTee on campus, organise fundraising events and sell out t-shirts. You will be led by your team lead and supported by SolidariTees central team.
What makes SolidariTee unique is that fundraising goes hand in hand with awareness-raising and campaigning in everything that we do. We also have our t-shirt collection (that’s where we get our name!), all of which are designed by artists with lived experience of migration, and which is central to what we do on campus. Not only are they a fantastic fundraising tool, but each tee is a visual, physical show of solidarity with refugees and other people forced to flee their homes.
Each uni team is responsible for:
- organising a mixture of fundraising and awareness-raising events - these range from conferences and panel discussions through to club nights, painting and pottery sessions, quizzes and more!
- selling SolidariTee t-shirts to raise money for refugee legal aid and mental health support
- building a campus presence and working to make sure that as many people as possible have accurate information about refugee issues and ways to support
Opportunity starts at the beginning of term time, however volunteers may start when they wish
