Sub theme: Children, Health and Wellbeing, Homeless and Housing, Human and Civil Rights, Youth Work and Young People
Stellify Award: This opportunity is part of 'Make a Difference'
Organisation Description: EMERGE 3Rs is a registered charity with a trading arm social enterprise EMERGE Recycling. Our core values are to promote the idea and practice of the real ‘3Rs’ of waste reduction, reuse and recycling and the wider concepts of community inclusion and improving local social, economic and environmental conditions.

We run FareShare Greater Manchester in partnership with the national charity; as a sub-regional hub, we receive surplus in-date food from the food industry and redistribute it to charities on the front line of alleviating poverty in Greater Manchester.
In Our ‘Touch Wood’ workshop we use reclaimed timber to make garden furniture and other household bespoke items.
Description of role: We're seeking volunteers to work closely with the driver of a temperature-controlled 3.5 tonne Mercedes Sprinter van to deliver surplus food orders to the premises of the benevolent projects we support.

The role includes loading and unloading the vehicle, and carrying out a range of tasks, from basic vehicle checks to delivery administration. It represents a great opportunity for obtaining CV-enhancing experience and skills in logistics, navigation, goods distribution, customer relations, general administration and teamwork. It is perfect for someone who is looking for a practical activity; someone looking to gain experience in the food industry, warehousing and customer service, and/or someone just wanting to help others and tackle food waste.

We're looking for a minimum regular commitment of a single 4 hour shift a week.

Our parent charity, EMERGE 3Rs, operates FareShare Greater Manchester in partnership with the national charity FareShare UK; as a sub-regional hub. FareShare fights food poverty and global warming by tackling food surplus.
We source overstocked food from retailers and manufacturers and are assisted by a busy friendly team of volunteers to re-distribute these supplies to over 220 frontline charities and community groups across Greater Manchester. These groups, in turn, provide meals to vulnerable people experiencing food insecurity; individuals who are homeless, families, and people who are unemployed or socially isolated. This food would otherwise have gone to waste in landfill, so we are simultaneously supporting people in need and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

We start at 8:30am, so that our vans are delivering food orders in time to allow charities to cook those much needed lunch time meals! However, we can be flexible with the times of volunteer shifts if required.

The necessary skills, experience and personal qualities for the role are as follows:
• Physical fitness, in order to move and handle food orders
• Ability to follow procedures and instructions
• Reliability and ability to commit to pre-agreed volunteer shifts
• Good verbal communication skills
• High respect for Health & Safety standards
• Interest in the work of FareShare Greater Manchester and our values

In return you will gain:
• New skills, experience and full training in the role
• Accredited Food Safety qualification
• Career and CV advice and support
• A reference for future employers
• The reimbursement of travel and lunch expenses
• The opportunity to give practical help to fight food poverty and reduce food waste (and associated CO2 emissions)
• The opportunity to meet like-minded people and make new friends

We welcome any time you can offer us, but do ask for a minimum commitment of 4 hours a week in order to cover our standard shifts. The shift you take part in is assigned according to what suits you best.

You will be required to complete introductory 'taster' sessions before you are confirmed in the role.
