Organisation Description: Stitched Up is a not-for-profit Community Benefit Society inspiring communities across Greater Manchester to take action on sustainable fashion.

We are currently based in Bridge 5 Mill where we run sewing workshops, mending socials as well as volunteer and textile reuse programmes. We work with local community to teach people about the environmental impact of the fashion industry and how to care for, mend and up-cycle their clothes. We also campaign for the rights of garment makers and for fast fashion companies to take accountability for their dangerous and damaging practices. Our aim is to lower the barrier of entry for these skills, by improving access; creating opportunities for people to take action on sustainable fashion in their own lives.

We’re always looking for passionate and enthusiastic volunteers to join our team. We run relaxed regular volunteer sessions once a week at Bridge 5 Mill as well as variety of other busier events such as Yard Sales, Clothes Swaps and Repair Cafes. We always have a lot going on to get involved with so there should be something to suit everyone.

You don’t have to be able to sew to volunteer with us, but it does help if you share our passion for sustainable fashion!
Description of role: A Repair Café is a free meeting place where people get together to - you guessed it - repair things! The first Repair Café was held in Amsterdam in 2009, and since then, have grown into a global network of menders. You can read more about the history of these events on the Repair Cafe website (https://www.repaircafe.org/en/)

We are setting up a new Repair Cafe - The Boggart Hole Clough Repair Cafe is a free to use, drop in community event, run by volunteers and open to all running the last Saturday of every month. Visitors can bring along broken or damaged items. They will work with a lovely volunteer (you!) to fix the item and hopefully give it another lease of life!

The event will run from 10am - 12pm (we ask volunteers to arrive half an hour early to help set up and pack down). We generally look for volunteers with expertise or interest in electronics, bikes, mechanics, furniture, IT and sewing. However, if there is an area of fixing expertise you have that hasn't been mentioned, please get in touch!

We let our visitors know that there is no guarantee that their item will be fixed but if you like problem solving this will be an ideal role for you! If you're a little nervous about taking on the responsibility of an expert we can always set you up to shadow someone at your first event whilst you find your feet.

We also need volunteers to help generally by talking to customers, manning the front desk and making everything go smoothly - so everyone is welcome.

This is a great way to gain practical work experience, meet other like-minded people and use your skills to support the community, teach and learn from others.

The Repair Cafe is located at Lakeside Cafe, Boggart Hole Clough, Manchester M9 7DF

Once you sign up I'll get in touch with more information - thanks!
