Description of role: The University of Manchester has already made a fantastic start on its Hedgehog Friendly Campus journey. Over the past year, staff and students have come together to achieve Bronze Accreditation, completing a range of activities that help protect one of the UK's most loved and threatened native species. Volunteers have taken part in litter picks, wildlife surveying, fundraising events, hedgehog first aid training, awareness campaigns, and the construction of hedgehog houses using reclaimed materials. Together, these efforts have helped create safer and more welcoming spaces for hedgehogs across our campus.
We're now looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help us build on this success and work towards the next level of accreditation. Whether you're passionate about wildlife conservation, looking to develop new skills, or simply want to meet like-minded people, there are plenty of ways to get involved. No previous experience is needed, just a willingness to learn and make a positive difference for nature.
As a volunteer, you could support practical conservation activities such as hedgehog footprint surveys, habitat improvements, campus litter picks, hazard audits, creating feeding stations and log piles, or helping to monitor hedgehog houses and wildlife cameras. There will also be opportunities to support communications and engagement through social media, blogs, awareness campaigns, workshops, and events that inspire others to take action for wildlife. Every month, we meet online to discuss updates and upcoming plans.
The Hedgehog Friendly Campus programme is about more than protecting hedgehogs. It is about creating a healthier, more biodiverse campus, building connections between staff and students, and helping everyone play a role in nature recovery. By volunteering, you'll be contributing to meaningful environmental action while gaining valuable experience in conservation, community engagement, teamwork, and project delivery.
