Organisation Details
University of Manchester Volunteering & Awards Team
Sub theme: Asylum Seekers and Refugees, Culture, Education, International
Description of role: Want to support migrants and refugees? Interested in improving your cooking skills while chatting with new people and helping them practise their English? Join us for a Volunteer Day with Rise and Flourish, supporting their English language learning and cooking sessions.
🍽️ About Rise and Flourish
Rise and Flourish is a local charity dedicated to creating welcoming spaces where people can learn, share, and grow together. Their project combines English language learning (ESOL) with cooking and movement, empowering migrants, refugees, and people for whom English is not a first language to build skills, confidence, and connections. The sessions aim to reduce isolation, promote wellbeing, and bring people together through learning.
🍽️ What will you be doing?
You will support the lesson and the students by:
• Conversing with participants to help improve their English-speaking skills
• Relaying cooking instructions provided by the teacher
• Offering guidance and support if students have questions during the session
No teaching experience is required - just a friendly and supportive attitude.
🍽️ When and where?
This Volunteer Day will be on Monday 16 February, from 9:30am to 12:30pm. It will be taking place in the Beacon Centre, 131 Barrington Street, Clayton, Manchester, M11 4FB.
We will be travelling to and from this location using a taxi. We will meet on campus at 9am to travel there together. If you would like to make alternative arrangements to travel there, please let me know.
🍽️ What do you need to bring?
- No food is required; you will be able to eat the cooked food at the end of the session
- Please let me know in advance if you have any food allergies, as alternative arrangements may be needed
- You are welcome to bring a water bottle
