Organisation Description: Biffa is the lead in the waste and recycling industry, operating at 270 sites across UK, servicing 2.4 million households and 4.1. million bins every week.
Description of role: At Biffa, our purpose is to change the way people think about waste. Waste matters. We're here to help solve the waste challenge in Manchester, and that is only possible by influencing people to think and act differently. Students arrive in Manchester from various areas of the country, and even the world. So we need help getting every student on the same page when it comes to recycling. We appreciate that recycling is confusing, the rules are different everywhere and every-changing. So we need your help.

In this role you will be educating and encouraging students to take responsibility for their own waste, recycle properly and take care of the area they live in during their time at university, so that students and residents can live in harmony in Manchester.

You will engage with your student peers to promote proper recycling, and discourage litter and fly tipping. You will be able to distribute items such as green bags for food waste, recycling split bags and literature about recycling, so that other students have the correct resources to be able to manage their waste responsibly. You may also wish to organise events such as litter picks, and would be given training, support and equipment to be able to do so. Regular meetings will be held with the Biffa engagement team, who will be supporting you in your role, the other student volunteers and a member of the University Volunteering Team. The meetings will provide necessary training and guidance, and will be an opportunity to share ideas and create new methods of engaging and inspiring other students.

There are further opportunities depending on what you want to get out of the programme and how much time you are able to contribute. We will provide all necessary training, including health and safety training on site, the opportunity to visit a local Materials Recovery Facility, and the possibility of visiting other Biffa sites. You will also receive a Biffa welcome pack during initial training.

If you would like to gain experience in teaching, further your experience in the environmental sector, or take part in a cause to improve your local community, we want to hear from you!
